Eco Silver Award

Eye School has made ‘Sustainability’ a core priority over the past year. We have worked hard to teach the children and staff about ‘sustained living’ and improve the impact our school has on the environment.

Our hard work and commitment has been recognised by the Eco-School Organistaion and after our initial success of achieving the Bronze Eco-Award last year, we have now been awarded our Silver Award for continued success and eco-development.

Our school Eco-committee meets regularly and have helped to implement lots of eco-friendly changes around the school. They have raised the awareness of electrical energy waste (turning off lights, computers and projectors) and water waste in the toilets and allotment areas.

The children have been involved in a number of eco-projects including:

1) A school Eco-Week

2) A 2 week ‘Happy Chick Hatching Project’

3) A visit from the Anglian Water Education Bus

4) An Eco-Committee visit to the Peterborough Recycling Facility

5) Whole school litter picks

6) An ‘electricity shut-down’ so children can experience what life would be like without electricity

7) A Water-aid fund raising activity for our link school

In addition to these projects, classes have also focussed on our energy consumption by using our new ‘Owl Electricity Monitor’ which identifies how much electricity we are using. A food waste study has really helped focus the children’s understanding of just how much food is thrown away each day. The new ‘Munch and Crunch restaurant’ has been able to adapt food menus and a considerable reduction in food waste has been noticed.

The allotments are now in full use with each class growing different plants and crops. The rabbit has moved to its summer home in the environmental area and the chickens will be back for a mini-project later in the summer term.
