We are looking forward to starting another engaging and exciting half-term in Year 4! Here's a glimpse into what your child will be learning this half term:
Curriculum Overview
English βοΈπ
This half term, the children will begin a poetry unit, exploring the features of Haiku poems. They will use their knowledge of nature and the world around them to create their own Haiku poems, focusing on carefully chosen vocabulary and imagery.
Following this, we will be studying Blue John by Berlie Doherty. Using the text as inspiration, the children will develop their letter-writing skills, learning how to structure and write effective letters for different purposes and audiences.
Maths ββ
This half term, the children will continue to develop their mathematical understanding through a range of practical and problem-solving activities. Our learning will focus on:
- Time – reading, writing and converting between analogue and digital times, as well as solving problems involving time intervals.
- Shape – identifying and describing the properties of 2D and 3D shapes, including angles and lines of symmetry.
- Statistics – interpreting and presenting data using a variety of charts, graphs and tables.
- Position and Direction – describing movement and position using coordinates, translation and directional language.
Throughout these units, the children will be encouraged to explain their reasoning and apply their knowledge to a range of real-life contexts.
Science πͺ¨π¦΄
In science, we will be continuing our learning about living things and their habitats, exploring how different organisms live and interact with their environments.
Geographyππ
In geography, the children will be learning about the Waterways of the UK. They will explore the different types of waterways, including rivers, canals and estuaries, and investigate their importance to both people and the environment.
D&Tπͺ
In D&T, the children will be designing and making their own healthy biscuits for a chosen target audience. They will then create attractive and practical packaging to appeal to their audience, developing their skills in designing, making and evaluating throughout the project.
Music πΆπ₯
In music, the children will be learning about adapting and transposing motifs. They will explore how short musical ideas can be changed and developed, before creating and performing their own motifs.
French π«π·π£
In French, the children will be learning French through the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. They will develop their vocabulary and speaking skills by exploring key words and phrases from the familiar tale.οΈ
RE βοΈπ
In RE, the children will be exploring the question: What does it mean to be a Sikh in Britain today? They will learn about Sikh beliefs, values and practices, and discover how Sikhs live out their faith in modern Britain.
PE πΊοΈπ
This half term, the children will be developing their skills in rounders and athletics. They will focus on improving teamwork, coordination and technique while taking part in a range of competitive and personal best challenges.
PSHE π§ π¬
In PSHE, the children will be taking part in transition lessons to help prepare them for moving into Year 5. They will explore the changes ahead, discuss any worries they may have, and celebrate the achievements they have made during Year 4.
Computingπ»πΈ
This half term, the children will be learning about photo editing. They will explore how to manipulate digital images using a range of editing tools and evaluate how these changes can help achieve a particular purpose.

πβοΈ PE – Every Thursday
Please send your child to school with their full PE kit every Thursday.
PE Kit includes:
- White t-shirt
- Black shorts/leggings/tracksuit bottoms
- Appropriate footwear (trainers)
Important: No earrings are allowed during PE and Forest school sessions. Children must be able to remove them independently as staff cannot assist and tape is no longer permitted. Children unable to remove their earrings will not be able to take part. Long hair must be tied up for all lessons.

- π§΄ Water Bottles: Please ensure your child has a named water bottle in school every day.
- π§₯ Label Everything: Label all clothing so that lost items can be returned promptly.
