Year 5 - Zebras

 

 

We’re excited to introduce our new teaching team for Year 5.  Miss Spowage will be your teacher and Mrs Reinis and Mrs Britton will be our wonderful teaching assistants across Year 5. We can’t wait for a fun and fantastic year of learning and adventure together!

Key information- Summer Term

Children in Zebras will have PE on a Monday. Children will need the correct PE kit: black shorts or joggers, plain white t-shirt and trainers. If children do not have kit, a phone call or message home will be made. Children will be doing PE every session unless we have a note from parents or carers to express a reason why they cannot take part. There are no forest school/swimming sessions this half-term. 

Year 5 Curriculum Overview – Summer Term

πŸ“š English
As readers and writers, we will explore a range of rich and inspiring texts. We will begin with The Paperbag Prince by Colin Thompson, using this thought-provoking story to write a hybrid leaflet that combines persuasive and informative writing. We will then study Radiant Child by Javaka Steptoe and Life Doesn’t Frighten Me by Maya Angelou, using these texts to support us in writing engaging non-fiction information texts.

Later in the term, we will explore The Sun in Me by Moira Andrew, creating our own free verse songs, and Animals of Africa, where we will write poems using puns and wordplay. Across the term, we will continue to develop our writing through a range of high-quality texts, focusing on vocabulary, structure and creativity.

βž• Mathematics
As mathematicians, we will explore shape, developing our understanding of angles and properties of 2D and 3D shapes. We will learn about position and direction, using coordinates and translation. Our learning will also include decimals and negative numbers, as well as converting units of measure. Towards the end of the term, we will investigate volume, applying our knowledge to solve a range of practical problems.

πŸ”¬ Science
As scientists, we will continue our learning about materials and their properties, exploring reversible and irreversible changes through practical investigations. We will also study living things and their habitats, including life cycles and how animals, including humans, grow and change over time.

🏺 History
As historians, we will study the Kingdom of Benin, learning about this important West African civilisation. We will explore its achievements in art, culture and society, and understand its significance in history.

πŸ—ΊοΈ Geography
As geographers, we will investigate the question How is our country changing? We will explore changes in the UK and our local area, including Peterborough, and develop our understanding of place knowledge. Using maps, atlases and fieldwork, we will study human and physical features, connections between places and how environments change over time.

✝️ Religious Education
In Religious Education, we will explore the question What would Jesus do? as we learn about Christian values and how these guide believers in their daily lives. We will also consider the question Why do some people believe in God and some people not?, exploring a range of viewpoints from different faiths and world views.

🎨 Art & Design Technology
As designers and artists, we will explore cooking and nutrition, learning how to make healthier food choices and prepare simple dishes. In art, we will focus on painting and mixed media, creating portraits that show expression, detail and creativity using a range of techniques and materials.

🎼 Music
As musicians, we will explore music from South and West Africa. We will develop our composition skills by creating music inspired by the Festival of Colour, experimenting with rhythm, structure and expression.

πŸ’» Computing
As computer scientists, we will begin with an introduction to vector graphics, learning how to create digital images using layers and grouped objects. We will then explore selection in programming by designing and coding our own interactive quizzes, developing our understanding of algorithms and logical thinking.

πŸ‡«πŸ‡· French
As linguists, we will learn to talk about Clothes and Habitats in French. We will build our vocabulary and practise speaking, listening, reading and writing through a range of engaging activities.

πŸƒ PE (Physical Education)
As athletes, we will learn and perform The Greatest Showman dance, developing coordination, rhythm and confidence. We will also take part in athletics, improving our running, jumping and throwing skills while building strength and endurance.

πŸ’¬ PSHE
As citizens, we will focus on economic wellbeing, learning about money, choices and future aspirations. We will also prepare for transition, developing confidence and strategies to support us as we move forward in our learning journey.

Key dates

Children in Zebras will have PE on a Monday. They will need full PE kit including a white t-shirt, black/navy bottoms and trainers. 

 Zebras have now completed their forest school and swimming sessions for the year, so will not need any additional kit on a Friday. 

This term is full of exciting learning opportunities as we explore new ideas, challenge ourselves and GROW across the curriculum.

Spring term

Happy new year!!! We are looking forward to starting another engaging and exciting first half-term in year 5! Here's a glimpse of what we will be learning this half-term. 

πŸ“š English

As readers and writers, we are diving into powerful texts such as Author and the Golden Rope by Joe Tod-Stanton. This book will help us why and how myths are important and support us in writing an interesting and descriptive myth, using emotive language and detailed description.  Later in the term, we will study Vikings and Kennings and Spelling, learning how to write both Kenning, experimenting with rhythm, imagery and poetic techniques.

βž• Mathematics

As mathematicians, we are developing our confidence with Multiplication and Division, multiply a 4-digit by a 1-digit number and carrying out short division. We will also be carrying out further work on fractions, including multiplying a unit fraction by an integer. In decimals and percentages, we will deepen our understanding of equivalent fractions and decimals. 

πŸ”­ Science

As scientists, we look further in to materials and their properties, understanding that materials can be sorted in a variety ways based on their properties. We will develop our use of scientific vocabulary to explain dissolving and solutions. Later in the term, we will explore properties and changes of materials, learning how to dissolve a solute in a solvent and then how to evaporate the solvent to recover the solute .

🏺 History

As historians, we are investigating the The Tudors, focusing on knowing that following the Norman conquest and the reign of William I, a line of monarchs descended from William I had controlled England. 

πŸ—ΊοΈ Geography

As geographers, we are studying Climate change and pollution, to know that our atmosphere acts like a blanket that traps the Sun's heat; know that people on Earth are making carbon dioxide, mainly through transport, manufacturing and agriculture; know that this extra carbon dioxide is leading to golbal warming as the world heats up. 

✝️ β˜ͺ️ Religious Education

In Religious Education, we begin by asking, What does it mean if God is holy and loving? as we explore Christian beliefs about the nature of God and how these beliefs affect how Christians live their lives. In the second half of the term, we will focus on Islam, exploring the question What does it mean for Muslims to follow God? and learning about the Five Pillars, prayer and key Islamic practices.

🎨 Art & Design Technology

As designers and artists, we are thinking creatively and practically. In DT, we will design and build our own electrical doodlers, learning about circuits, switches, and motors. In art, we will explore 3D sculpture and installation, using a variety of media to create an interactive piece that engages the viewer and communicates a clear theme.

🎼 Music

As musicians, we are learning to play tuned percussion instruments. We’ll explore melody and rhythm, practise reading musical notation and begin composing short musical pieces. Throughout the unit, we’ll listen to and evaluate different musical styles to inspire our own performance.

πŸ’» Computing

As computer scientists, we are learning about IT systems and digital searching- understanding how technology helps us gather and organise information effectively and safely. We will also become filmmakers by planning, capturing and editing short videos, learning how to tell a story using multimedia tools.

πŸ‡«πŸ‡· French

As linguists, we are developing our conversational French through topics such as The Date and Do You Have a Pet? We will revisit key phonics and pronunciation, while also building vocabulary and sentence structures to help us read, write and speak more confidently.

πŸƒ PE (Physical Education)

As athletes, we are building our fitness and fundamental movement skills. Through our multiskills sessions, we’ll focus on agility, coordination and balance, while fitness sessions will help improve our strength, stamina and endurance.

πŸ’¬ PSHE 

As citizens, we are focusing on family and relationships, learning how to build positive, respectful friendships and communicate effectively. We’ll also explore health and wellbeing, developing our understanding of emotional health, physical care and strategies for staying safe and resilient.
