Welcome to Year 2! We have lots of wonderful learning planned across the curriculum and can't wait to share it with the children. Below is an overview of what we will be learning:

English ๐
This half term we will be developing our reading, writing and comprehension skills through a range of engaging texts.
We will be studying the poem "Zebra Question", exploring:
- Performance poetry
- Rhyme and rhythm
- Vocabulary
Using the story "Troll Swap", the children will:
- Explore characters and settings
- Sequence events
- Write their own imaginative stories
- Use exciting vocabulary
- Focus on punctuation, grammar and editing their work
Mathematics ๐ข
This half term our learning will focus on:
Place Value
Children will:
- Recognise the value of each digit in a 2-digit number.
- Compare and order numbers.
- Count forwards and backwards.
- Partition numbers into tens and ones.
Addition and Subtraction
Children will:
- Add and subtract 1-digit and 2-digit numbers.
- Use practical equipment and pictorial methods.
- Solve number problems.
- Explain how they found their answers.
History ๐ฅ
Our History topic is:
The Great Fire of London
Children will investigate:
- How the fire started
- Why it spread so quickly
- Samuel Pepys and his diary
- How London changed after the fire
- The importance of historical evidence
Science ๐งช
This half term we are learning about:
Materials and Their Properties
Children will:
- Identify everyday materials.
- Compare materials.
- Describe their properties.
- Investigate which materials are suitable for different purposes.
- Carry out simple scientific investigations.
Religious Education โจ
Our enquiry question is:
Who is Muslim and how do they live?
Children will:
- Learn about the beliefs of Muslims.
- Explore important Muslim celebrations and traditions.
- Learn about prayer and worship.
- Understand the importance of kindness, respect and community.
Reading at Home ๐
Please read with your child every day where possible. Children will have their books changed every Monday, so please ensure they bring their book and reading record in for then.
Regular reading helps develop fluency, confidence and understanding.
PE and Swimming ๐โ๏ธ๐
PE takes place every Thursday.
For the first half term:
- ๐จ Koalas Class will take part in PE every Thursday.
- ๐ต Chimps Class will attend swimming every Thursday.
Please ensure your child comes to school wearing the correct PE kit or with their swimming kit on Thursdays.
PE Kit
Children should wear:
- White T-shirt
- Black shorts or jogging bottoms
- Trainers suitable for outdoor activities
Swimming Kit
Please ensure your child brings:
- Swimming costume or trunks
- Towel
- Swimming hat
Please make sure that all clothing and equipment are clearly labelled with your child's name.
