Giraffes - Year 1

 Monday 28th June

We are completing our lesson by Zoom again and the resources needed for Monday's lessons are below. I have also included a sheet of British coins and notes for Thursday's maths lesson to give you plenty of time to cut one of each coin and note out ready for the lesson.  Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any problems accessing the resources.

Summer Term

Welcome back Giraffes.  It is wonderful to have everyone back in school together again.  This term we will be looking at seasonal change and plants in Science.  In history we are going to be looking at the monarchy and comparing Queen Elizabeth II with both Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth I.  Geography links with our work on seasonal changes in Science and we will also be exploring the different types of weather we experience here in the UK.  In computing we will be building on the work we have done earlier in the year with the beebots and looking at how to make sure instructions are precise.  For our art we will be looking at adding texture to pictures through collage and in music we will further develop our singing skills.

PE or swimming will be on Monday depending on the group your child was in before the Easter holiday.  Those swimming will continue to build their water confidence and kicking skills while the children that are doing PE will be practising their athletic skills.

Welcome back Year 1!

I hope you have all had a lovely Christmas holiday and we wish you all a happy new year! Sadly, we cannot all be together as we would like but we will still be able to see your smiley faces on our Zoom lessons daily, which we are really excited about! Each day, we will be delivering 3 live lessons which will be phonics, English and maths, please see the timetable below. We will also provide a topic lesson each day; this will not be live but all resources available on Tapestry. Our main source of communication will be through Tapestry, which you should all have a log in for, if you do not, we have today resent out activation emails. Please check your junk emails as it may go into there. On this email, there will be an activation link for you to start your account. After this week, every Monday we will upload all of the information about the learning taking place that week. There will be information and documents for the live lesson as well our topic learning that will not be live, but instead delivered through documents and videos online. All work completed should be uploaded to Tapestry for us to see. If you cannot access Tapestry, please send an email to the class email address:

giraffes@eye.peterborough.sch.uk and badgers@eye.peterborough.sch.uk

Until Friday 15th January, it will be Miss Cockle delivering the online lessons and replying to emails for both classes while Ms Sargeant will be in class teaching the children that are in school. If the email is specifically for Ms Sargeant please understand that she won’t be able to reply to this until 3:30 due to teaching.

On Tapestry, you will find the links and log in details for the live lessons on Zoom.

Many thanks,

Miss Cockle and Ms Sargeant

Outdoor Learning

Over the past two weeks we have been looking for the signs of Autumn in the forest area. We also built hedgehog homes for any hedgehog that might need a cosy place to hibernate.

DT Dips and Dippers

The children have been tasting dips and dippers to see which are the tastiest so that they can make their own later in the term.

PE

Just a reminder that PE is on Thursdays.  We will start PE from the week beginning 14th September so our first PE day will be Thursday 16th September.  Children will come to school in their PE kit and stay in their kit all day.

Bookman Visit

The children have had a busy first two days exploring the classroom and outdoor area, as well as catching up with friends. We also had a visit to the classroom from Bookman. The children are able to send Bookman any pictures of themselves reading at home to Bookman’s email address.

What are we learning this year?

Thursday 3rd September

It was fantastic to have the children back today and everyone had a good time exploring the classroom and playing with friends.

PE

Year 1 PE day is a Thursday and children will come to school in their PE kit and remain in their kit for the day.  Thank you for your assistance in this.

Welcome to Giraffes

It is hard to believe that the summer is over and it is time for the Squirrels to become Giraffes.  I am really excited to welcome your children into year 1 and I hope your children are looking forward to coming back to school, catching up with their friends and learning new things.  We are very lucky to have two teaching assistants working with Giraffes class, Miss Oxbury and Mrs Naylor.

Our topic for this term is Toys, a subject I am sure your child already knows lots about.  We will be learning about the history of toys and completing lots of activities linked to toys.  In English we will be using texts such as The Tiger Who Came  to Tea to stimulate writing.  We will be consolidating our ability to read, write and understand numbers to 20 in maths, using practical resources and applying our understanding to real life situations.  Your child will read with an adult in school both individually and within a group.  During the first few days we will be checking your child's book level and aim to provide all children with a reading book at an appropriate level by Friday 11th September.  Your child will also have a reading log which will be written in when a child has read with your child.  We will check your comments in the diary and count your child's reads weekly.  Your child will need to hand in their reading journal and book on a Friday and this will be returned on the following Monday (letter to follow). Your child will work towards certificates for 20, 50 and 100 reads.  There will also be daily phonics lessons and we will closely monitor your child's progress through the phonics scheme of work.

We really look forward to getting to know you and your child better as the term progresses.  If you have any comments, questions or concerns we will be in the Year 1 outdoor area from 8.40am.  Please bear with us at home time as we get to know your faces and those of friends and family who pick your child up.  It might take us a little time to check that each child is going home safely with the correct person at the start of term.

Here's hoping for a sunny September and lots of fabulous learning experiences.

Miss Sargeant
