Design and Technology at Eye C of E Primary School

At Eye CE Primary School, we believe that children should develop skills and knowledge in design, structures, mechanisms, electrical control and a range of materials including food. Through D&T sessions, we will encourage children's creativity and challenge them to think critically about purpose. We will provide our children with the opportunity to develop skills, knowledge and understanding of designing and making functional products. We feel it is vital to nurture creativity and innovation through design, and by exploring the designed and made world in which we all live.

D&T Long Term Overview

How is D&T taught at Eye CE Primary School?

Through a variety of creative and practical activities, pupils at Eye School are taught the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to engage in an iterative process of designing and making. When designing and making, children are taught to design, make and evaluate their product/s and apply any technical knowledge related to the area of learning. As part of their work with food, children are taught how to cook and apply the principles of nutrition and healthy eating.

How do we assess D&T at Eye?

As D&T is a Foundation subject, it is assessed by teacher judgement. This means that there are no assessments for the children, other than those set by the class teacher. These assessments are carried out at the end of each term.

During D&T lessons, we regularly complete retrieval practice, in the form of Sticky Steps and Sticky Quizzes which test the children on the knowledge taught to them in previous years, as well as the lessons they have covered in their current learning sequence. Children will also complete Next Steps to either extend their learning or to consolidate their learning.
