Summer Term

How can we already be hurtling into summer term!  The children will be engaging in lots of exciting learning this coming term. In English the focus text will be ‘The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch’ by David & Ronda Armitage where we will be focussing on story structure and vocabulary and using this to help us to re-write our own version of the story. As part of this unit we will also be revisiting instructions as one of our mini writes.  In Maths we will be looking at multiplication and division where we will learn to count in 2's, 5's and 10's. Through the use of arrays we will learn to make equal groups by grouping and sharing. In Science children will learn about different plants and trees.  The history topic is all about the Monarchy for this country and how it decided. We will learn about the different periods in history and how these are named after the Monarchs in particular Queen Elizabeth I, Queen Victoria, Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles III.  

PE will continue to be on a Tuesday afternoon. Please ensure your child comes to school with the relevant kit to change into (earrings removed).

Forest School and Swimming will take place on a Thursday morning. A friendly reminder both of these lessons are part of our curriculum at Eye and as such it is important that the children do not miss any of these learning experiences. The swimming pool is heated and is a welcome temperature for the children to enjoy during the colder months. Swimming hats must be worn and earrings removed.

We appreciate that the British weather can be very unpredictable and understand that outdoors can be very cold and wet. For this reason, we encourage you to send in a change of clothes suitable for all elements at Forest School, wellies are an essential. As ever, we will be outside come rain or shine! Please ensure your child has a waterproof coat and legs and arms should be covered.

Reading remains a key focus for us in Year 1. Children will be sitting their National Phonics Screen week commencing 12th June and reading and phonics will be a particular focus in the lead up to this. Reading books and records are looked at and reads counted every Monday but can be changed as often as needed as long as the record has been written in by an adult and they have been able to access the text.

Spring 1

This term is set to be as busy and full as last term.  The children will be engaging in lots of exciting learning over the next few weeks. In English the focus text will be ‘Lost and Found’ by Oliver Jeffers. We will be looking at different features of a report to help us construct our own non-chronological report about an animal towards the end of the first half term.  In Maths we will be working on our knowledge and understanding of place value of numbers within 20. In Science children will learn about different materials and explore their uses and properties.  The history topic is all about famous nurses and the significant individuals Florence Nightingale, Mary Seacole and Edith Cavell.  The children will be learning about what they did and the legacy it leaves today.

Welcome to Foxes!

I am really looking forward to a year filled with fun learning and exciting activities this year. We are beginning our Year 1 learning with two fabulous topics: Traditional Tales in English and Bonfire Night in History. I am sure these will both inspire some interesting conversations both at school and at home. Please let us know of anything you get up to at home in relation to these subjects. Perhaps you have a favourite traditional tale you would like to bring into school and share with the class. 

Some key messages for Autumn term:

I will be outside to greet the children each morning from 8:30am and our first lesson will begin at 8:45am.

PE will take place on a Tuesday, please remember to send your child in with a labelled PE kit consisting of a plain white t-shirt, plain black shorts/joggers and a pair of trainers. We will be swimming and attending Forest School on a Thursday. Please send your son/daughter into school with a labelled swimming kit, including a swimming hat and appropriate costume. Forest School can get very muddy! Children must bring a pair of wellies or spare shoes that you don't mind getting messy for them to wear during this time. We will be outside during all winds and weathers so a warm, waterproof coat is essential!

All items of property should be clearly labelled including the children's water bottles.
