Jaguars - Year 6

Summer term in year 6 is an exciting place to be learning!

In English, we will be focusing on re-drafting and editing some previous pieces of writing that we have done, to make them even better. We will also be writing balanced arguments about a topic of our own choice, a recount of our residential trip AND writing up a science investigation, which will link to our science topic (evolution and adaptation!)

In Mathematics, we are exploring the topics we have learnt this year even further and doing lots of revision. Later on in the term, we will be taking part in the £5 money challenge to unleash our inner entrepreneur!

What is the story of medicine through history?  Why was there so little change in medicine during the medieval era?  So many questions, so many exciting new things to learn in this topic which takes us back through our chronological learning over our time at Eye.  From trepanning to vaccination, let’s investigate when it happened first and why it matters.

In RE, we will be studying the question: 'What kind of King is Jesus?'

As well as all of this, in DT we are looking at Pulleys and Gears by making our own mechanical systems alongside studying textiles in which we will look at combining different fabric shapes. Additionally, we will be exploring photography in our art sessions; a 3-way comparison in Geography; and exploring citizenship, economic well-being and transition in our PSHE learning. Let's not forget about the Careers Fair, too!

We will be attending forest school each Thursday afternoon in Summer 1. In Summer 2, we will be swimming on Thursday afternoons.

Oh yes— AND we are beginning our end of term play… We'll Meet Again! That's after we have been on our residential to Kingswood West Runton!

Let’s rock the final term of year 6 together!

Year 6 Summer term clubs - which clubs are you attending this term?

Today we explored the outdoor nature area to help inspire us to write our environmental poems. We used the senses help gather ideas too.

World Book Day 2022

In History, we were discussing what it was like to live in an Anderson Shelter during WW1 and WW2. We are lucky to have an Andersen Shelter in school so we explored this and discussed what it would have been liked.

Spring 1 Updates

An insight into some of our exciting learning this half term is below...

In English, we will be writing poetry inspired by Wilfred Owen's 'Dulce Et Decorum Est'. We will then be writing informal letters in role as a WWI soldier in the trenches, to a loved one back home.

In Maths, we will be consolidating and deepening our knowledge of decimals and percentages. Towards February half term, we will be studying algebra, ratio and converting units.

Our History enquiry question is 'How has war changed Britain?' We will be studying WWI and WWII. I cannot wait!

In Science, we'll be learning all about living things and their habitats.

In RE, our key learning question for the half term is 'What does it mean for a Jewish person to follow God?'

PE is now on a Friday. Please send your child to school in their PE kit.

I look forward to another great half term of learning in Year 6.

Autumn 2 Updates

As we step into our second half term in Year 6, I am filled with excitement - we have lots of great learning to complete together! An insight into some of our learning this half term is below...

In English, we will be writing a script to narrate over a sequence of moving images. We'll be watching Blue Planet: Frozen Seas as inspiration for our writing. I know lots of you are interested in this so I'm looking forward to seeing your writing outcomes in a few weeks time. Later on in the half term, we will be studying the book 'Wonder' by R. J. Palacio, where we will compare the book with the film.

In Maths, we will be consolidating and deepening our knowledge of fractions. Towards Christmas, we will be studying our geometry unit in which we will focus on position and movement.

Our Geography enquiry question is 'Could you survive the ice?' This unit links to our previous learning on the Titanic and Shackleton's Journey. I know you're going to love this sequence of learning!

In Science, we'll be learning all about electricity. I hope you're ready for lots of practical learning!

(Parents - a gentle reminder: if you wish to provide your child with extra revision materials, please do not use previous SATs papers as these will be used for assessment throughout the school year.)

PE will continue to be on Wednesdays. Please send your child to school in their PE kit.

Jaguars will be at Forest School for the first 3 weeks of Autumn 2: 4/11, 11/11 & 18/11. Please wear/bring appropriate clothing on these days.

Please continue to keep an eye on our class page for updates and snapshots of our learning this half term!

1/10/21 - Ready for the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party and to perform our playscripts!

PE, Swimming and Forest School Letter

Welcome Back Jaguars!

I am looking forward to an action-packed first half term in Year 6 with you all!  We have some fantastic learning opportunities to look forward to, starting with our first History topic - The Titanic! I know you enjoyed starting your Titanic models at the end of last year, and I am looking forward to finding out more about the tragic events that occurred on 14th April 1912 with you too!

In English, we will be immersing ourselves in the classic novel 'Alice in Wonderland' by Lewis Carroll, and having our own version of the Mad Hatter's Tea Party. We will be performing playscripts at the Mad Hatter's Tea Party (that we are going to be writing ourselves!) We can't wait to follow Alice down the rabbit hole and into the weird and wacky world that is Wonderland!

In Maths, we will be studying number and place value - ensuring that we are secure with numbers to 10 million. This will then be followed by revision of the four operations. Please come and speak to me if you have any questions about concepts or methods taught in class if you wish to support your child at home.

(A gentle reminder: if you wish to provide your child with extra revision materials, please do not use previous SATs papers as these will be used for assessment throughout the school year.)

PE will be on Wednesdays. Please send your child to school in their PE kit.

And do keep an eye on our class page for updates and snapshots of our learning this term!

I look forward to seeing you all soon!
